The Department of English at N.S.S.COLLEGE OTTAPALAM provides students with the opportunity of savouring a text. The Department is coeval with the college and was established in 1961 with Smt. V Padmini as the Head of the Department and the PG Courses commenced soon after (from 1962 onwards). We have 12 permanent faculty members among whom are research guides, PhD holders, University Board members etc. The department actively encourage both the academic and non-academic activities of the students. We have a heterogeneous student community who come from various strata of society. The Department has a proud history of producing rank holders at the University level and many winners of UGC National Eligibility Test, and our students are well placed in different walks of life. The Department has hosted several academic programmes like seminars and talks by distinguished personalities and co-curricular activities including a literary club Dialogue, and a Film club Prisma.

Undergraduate and graduate students, whether planning to enter professional or academic job markets after graduation, leave with skills allowing them to communicate, collaborate, and problem solve in an increasingly-globalized cultural landscape. Student–faculty interaction is at the center of our department.

The Department of English houses a vibrant, diverse, and engaged faculty. Our publications and pedagogy are centered on the study of literature, film, and culture. The close study of cultural texts offers the most humane and sensitive opportunity to articulate compelling questions. As teachers and advisors to graduate and post graduate students, we train the next generation of professors and scholars. In our academic strategies, we strive to create a more inclusive and representative class of higher education professionals.

A large department, The English Department exhibits extensive diversification across various fields of interest. Our scholarship highlights diversity in narrative, literary, popular culture, and the breaking down of traditional boundaries. We foster strong interdisciplinary ties with African American Studies, Women’s Writing, Ethnic American Literature, Post-colonial Writings, and Culture Studies at the PG level and American and Postcolonial Literature, Regional Literatures in Translation, and Media Studies at the UG level.



The Department’s goals over the next few years include:

  • Continuing to strengthen film and new media studies in ways that differentiate our program from similar programs and establish a position of leadership.
  • Developing better support structures for the Language Lab that will make its facilities sustainable for our students.
  • To publish a literary magazine edited by department faculty.
  • To more effectively prepare graduate students for successful placements in a competitive job market.

  • The Department has a fully functioning language lab. It has a Postgraduate library, containing select books befitting research and analysis of the core texts exclusively for the use of its PG students and teachers. We have organised several National and regional seminars and literary workshops with eminent scholars as keynote speakers. For its enviable achievements over the years, this department is one of the best of its kind.

      2 Malayalam

The Department of Malayalam started functioning in the N.S.S college from 1968 onwards. Malayalam has been taught as a second language paper from the year of the college’s inception. Now the department offers B.A. Degree in Malayalam as Sanskrit a complementary course .The total seats of the main course has been increased from 20 to 40. Along with this, more than 500 students are learning Malayalam as their second language.

The activities of the Department of Malayalam are enlivened by a group of teachers and students, who enthusiastically endeavour to approach the language of Malayalam, literature and its culture seriously, and contribute immensely to enhance the growth of the mother language.

      3 Sanskrit      
      4 Hindi

The Department of Hindi of the N.S.S. College, Ottapalam began to function in the year 1961. In the beginning Hindi was taught as Part II – Second Language in Pre Degree level. In the year 1968 the Department upgraded and began to offer regular B.A.Degree - Hindi Language and Literature course. Now B.A Hindi Language and Literature Programme having Common, Core and Complimentary papers. All the papers are teaching in Hindi language and handled by the teachers of the Hindi Department which is followed in the previous period also. Total seats offered 40.

In the academic year 2014-2015 according to CUCBCSS the University of Calicut has revised the Scheme and Syllabus of B.A Programme [U.G] as Common, Core and Complimentary courses in Hindi. Internal assessment also decided to give. 20 marks for Internal Assessment and 80 marks for External examination to each paper. [Internal marks distribute as 5 marks for Attendance, 5 marks for Assignments/Seminars etc and 10 marks for Terminal Examinations.

The main goal is to propagate the use of National and Official Language Hindi and to promote Nationalism and Humanism through language. Learning of Hindi make the students competent for many job opportunities in Central Govt: undertakings. This help them to communicate in Hindi with the people of other states in India. It also foster the creative skills of students. Drafting in Hindi, Training in News Reading and Spoken Hindi will strengthen their skills.

     
      5 Mathematics

Vision:

Learn mathematics and know the mother of all knowledge

Mission:

Dedicated teaching that empowers under graduate and post graduate students to formulate mathematical and statistical problems, communicate the solutions and their significance.

The department started functioning right from the inception of the college in 1961 with degree in mathematics and upgraded as a postgraduate department in 1966. Currently there are 7 permanent faculties and a guest faculty.

      6 Physics

History of the Department :


Department of Physics was established in the year 1963, with one of the major subject of study in pre-degree. B.Sc Physics Course started in the year 1963. Later, M.Sc course was added to the list in the year 1999.



Courses :


1. 6 Semester B.Sc (Physics) with Mathematics and Computer Applications as Complementary.
2. 4 Semester M.Sc (Physics).

Both the courses affiliated to University of Calicut.

      7 Chemistry

Department of chemistry was established in the year 1961 and upgraded to a graduate department in 1963. The department offers two undergraduate programs namely BSc Chemistry with sanctioned strength 28 and BSc Industrial chemistry with sanctioned strength 25. The industrial chemistry program was started in the year 1998 with the financial aid of UGC, Newdelhi. Both the programs include courses in organic, physical and inorganic chemistry as core subjects and Maths and Computer science as complementary subjects. The industrial chemistry program includes additional papers of medicinal chemistry. The department also offers two interdisciplinary open courses namely Environmental chemistry and Chemistry in daily life.

      8 Botany

Department of Botany was established in 1961 initially with Pre-University course and gradually with three year degree programme of B.Sc. Botany in 1979 with Chemistry and Zoology as subsidiaries. Pre-degree was detached from the college and currently has 4 teaching faculty and 2 lab staff. Advanced Systematics is the specialization paper for B.Sc. degree programme. An open course in Applied Botany is also being conducting by the department. Altogether 36 batches have been awarded the B.Sc. degree with Botany. More than 500 Botanical specimens including algae, fungi, bryophytes, pteridophytes and gymnosperms are well preserved. The department maintains a medicinal garden in the campus and also provides plant identification service to the nearby college students.

      9 Zoology

The Department of Zoology was established in 1977. From 1961 onwards Pre-degree courses were running. Presently the Department offers B.Sc. degree in Zoology with an intake of 36 students. Botany and Chemistry are the complementary subjects. An open course for other stream students in Human Health and Sex Education is being offered. The Core students are offered specialization in Aquaculture, Poultry Science and Animal Husbandry. The department activities include various social outreach programs like blood and organ donation camps, vermicomposting and medical camps and also organizing subject oriented seminars and field studies. The department is well equipped with competent faculty and funded research projects.

      10 Computer Science

Mission:

To impart quality education in view of the global requirements with special stress on national needs.

Vision:

Computer Education to all.


Computer Science was started as a subject of study at the subsidiary level for B.Sc. Mathematics and B.Sc. Physics in the year 1988. Till 1995, the classes were handled by the Physics department. In 1995, B.Sc. Computer Science programme was started with Mathematics and Electronics as the complementary subjects. The department of Computer Science was established in the year 1996. Later Computer Science was introduced as a subsidiary subject for both B.Sc. Chemistry and B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry. An open course in web designing is being offered to students of other streams in the fifth semester of their programme. In 2013, M.Sc. Computer Science was started with an intake of 12 students. The department is well equipped with competent faculty.


     
      11 Electronics

Electronics department started in 1995 offers complementary course in Electronics for B.Sc Computer Science Programme. The Complementary course includes Electronic Devices, Electronic Circuits, Digital Electronics and Microprocessors. Duration of the complementary course is 4 semesters. The Electronics Laboratory is well equipped with sufficient number of electronic components, trainer kits and instruments. The Central library of the college has a good collection of books in Electronics.


     
      12 Economics

Department of Economics started functioning in 1969 with Shri K P Prabhakaran Nair as the first Head of the Department. It is one of the oldest departments of this institution. The department has been enriched with top quality and committed teachers right from the beginning.The teaching activities of the department acquired broader perspective with the introduction of post graduate programme in 1984, under the initiative of shri PS R Menon the then Head of the Department.The departments of history and politics were bifurcated in the year 1989.

Teaching faculty reveals a blend of experience and young dynamism.there are ongoing minor research projects and participation in seminars and workshops there is a well equipped PG library and facilities for smart classes.In tune with its vision to help our students to meet the needs of changing times, the department is trying to conduct more skill development programmes like workshop on online share market trading , training in SPSS.The department mentors its students through orientation programmes, and advises them on career progression. It hopes to produce good quality students with social commitment . The department has a strong network of alumni from all walks of life.

      13 History

The department of History in NSS College, Ottapalam began to function in the year 1961. It contributes very much to the upkeep of a vibrant intellectual atmosphere on the college campus. The department with BA programme was started in 2014. Students of this department have secured many high grade marks in the university level. At present the department has one permanent faculty with three guest faculty members and about 150 students. The department provides CUCBCSS (Calicut University Choice Based Credit Semester System) BA programme in History.

      14 Political Science

The Department of Political science is established in 1969 as a subsidiary department. The department is offering complementary course Political Science to UG programme in Economics and English language and literature. With the revamping of U G curriculum by the affiliating University from 2009 onwards, Political Science as a complementary course has been offered in the first four semesters. These courses aim to introduce the nature, scope and importance of the discipline in the present political scenario. The main objective of the course is familiarise the students with the basic ideas, concepts and institutions in the contemporary political system. Some core political ideologies are also included in the syllabus which helps the students to make a better critical political consciousness. Through this course, the department aims to make a critical rational political awareness among the students and their active participation in shaping and sharing of political power for a better political future of our society.


     
      15 Commerce

To impart quality education in Commerce to all, based on social justice and gender equality, by providing opportunities for their overall development.

Mission:

To enable the students to meet the challenges of the present world and make them responsible citizens of India.


Started functioning with B.Com Course in 1962, the department of commerce trails a glorious history crowning 53 B.Com and 49 M.Com batches with merit and value. The department offers B.Com (Finance) and M.Com (Finance). Prof. Ramachandran Nair, our founder Head of the Department is a stalwart in teachers’ national movement. The department has the distinction of being the pioneer in commerce education in northern Kerala. The department is one of the largest in the institution with faculty strength of 8 full time and one part time out of which one is a doctoral research guide in Calicut and MG University.


The department is a dream destination for those aspiring to pursue their interest in the discipline of commerce. The department provides good academic resources in the form of committed faculty and digitalized library. It is a matter of great pride that many alumni of our department now occupy exalted positions in the society as administrators, professors, bankers, professionals and successful entrepreneurs.


The department offers coaching for competitive examinations like JRF/NET /SLET . The activities of the department are implemented through ED Club, Finacle Club, Tourism Club and Skill development Club. The department offers Certificate Courses since 2011-12.The department has proved its excellence with committed faculty and dedicated students who bring laurels to the institution in the field of academic, arts , sports and games.

      16 Physical Education

The department started functioning in 1967 under its first HOD, Mr. A.K Balagopal. Presently, the college has Football ground, Shuttle Badminton court, Volleyball court, Kabadi court, Cricket pitch , Basketball court,Handball court and infrastructure facilities like Weight training equipments, weighing machine, Aerobics, Yoga, 200ms track, chess board , Carom boards and supporting equipments for all games. We have college teams for Volleyball, Shuttle Badminton, Kabadi, Weight lifting; Wushu,Archery,Boxing,Wrestling,Kho-Kho,Handball,Kalaripayattu, Chess, Cricket, Football, Track and Field ,Ball Badminton and Aquatics.

In addition, the physical education department offers the course, “ Physical Activity Health And Wellness” as an open course for the fifth semester UG students.
