The Nair Service Society is an organization, that sprawling from one end of our state to the other, has been playing a signal role in the transformation of our society. Literate Kerala is deeply indebted to the N.S.S. for Elementary schools to Grade I Colleges set up and managed by this organization throughout the length and breadth of our state. Most of these instructions are in rural areas which would have remained obscure and unawakened easily for several more decades had it not been for these temples of learning founded there by the N.S.S. chroniclers have already acknowledged the role of the N.S.S. as an agent of progress and change.

N.S.S. College, Ottapalam, affiliated to the University of Calicut was born out of the dreams of the dreams of the great visionary and social reformer, Bharata Kesari Sri. Mannath Padmanabhan. It was consecrated by Swami Vishadanandha, President of Sree Ramakrishna Ashram, Palappuram and was formally inaugurated by Mrs. Prabhakaran Thampan on 10th July 1961. In July 1962 it was upgraded and was shifted to the present site. The premised of the College consist mostly of donated from Smt. K.P.S. Menon and Sri. Vapala Sankaranarayana Menon. There have been others too who must indeed be remembered with gratitude. At present this institution is a full fledged Grade I College with 13 UG course and 6 PG courses. In February 2007 the college was accredited by NAAC with B++ status.
